Chapter VI

Lubricants and Care

The quiet essentials that make everything else work.

Lubricants, cleaners and storage are the unglamorous infrastructure of this whole subject. The right formula depends on what it will touch: skin, latex, silicone, glass. The wrong combination can damage a product or irritate skin.

Read

Notes on materials and fit
Osmolality and pH
Some public-health guidance discusses lubricant osmolality and pH. Manufacturers do not always publish these figures; when they do, they are worth noting for sensitive skin.
Oil and latex
Oil-based products, including many massage oils and household oils, are widely reported to weaken latex barriers. Keep them apart unless the packaging explicitly says otherwise.
In this chapter
Water-based, silicone-based, oil-based and hybrid formulas compared · Which ingredients people with sensitive skin often look for or avoid · Why silicone lubricant and silicone products are a combination to check · How massage oils differ from lubricants · Cleaners, drying and storage that suit each material.

General reference

Lubricant and material compatibility

A general educational summary of widely reported guidance. It does not replace the individual manufacturer’s instructions, which take precedence in every case. Where a cell says “check packaging”, the answer depends on the specific formula.
