“Waterproof” on a listing can mean anything from “fine in the bath” to “try not to get it wet”. Only an IP rating defines the word, and most listings do not include one.
IP ratings in one paragraph
An IP code such as IPX7 comes from the IEC 60529 standard. The first digit describes protection against solids; an X means it was not tested. The second digit describes protection against water. IPX7 indicates the product withstood immersion in up to one metre of water for thirty minutes under test conditions. IPX4 means it withstood splashing. The rating describes a test, not a lifetime guarantee.
When there is no rating
Most listings use plain words. In practice, “waterproof” usually means submersible and “water-resistant” or “splash-proof” means it can be washed under a tap but not immersed. Without a rating, the manufacturer's instructions are the only authority, and the cautious assumption is water-resistant.
The port is the weak point
Products that charge through a covered port are rarely fully waterproof, whatever the listing says, because the cover is a seal that wears. Products with magnetic charging contacts can be sealed completely, which is why they dominate the fully waterproof category. If bath use matters to you, look for magnetic charging and a stated IPX7 or higher rating.
- Magnetic contacts: usually fully sealed
- Covered port: treat as water-resistant
- Battery compartment with a screw cap: check the listing carefully
