Nominal width

Nominal width is the flat width of a condom in millimetres, printed on the packaging. It means the same thing across brands, unlike “large”, “snug” or “regular”. Manufacturers publish guidance matching nominal width to measured circumference; use it. A sampler across several widths is the practical way to compare fit.

Materials

Natural rubber latex is the most common and best studied. Polyisoprene is a synthetic alternative for people with latex sensitivity, with a similar feel. Polyurethane is thinner and conducts heat well but stretches less. Lambskin is a natural material that some public-health sources describe as unsuitable for protection against sexually transmitted infections; check reputable guidance before choosing it for that purpose.

Textures and thickness

Ribbed and dotted textures change sensation; thin variants are designed to feel less present. None of these changes the basic requirement of correct fit and correct use according to the instructions.

Reading the box

Look for the nominal width, the material, the expiration date, a lot number and the relevant conformity marks for your market. Store packets away from heat, sunlight and sharp objects such as keys. Discard anything past its date or with damaged packaging.

No barrier product eliminates all risk. Public-health bodies describe correct and consistent use according to the manufacturer's instructions as what makes a condom effective. Questions about infections, contraception or pregnancy belong with a clinician or a reputable health service.
