For most people, BDSM accessories are a considered, consensual form of adult play with its own etiquette. This introduction covers the etiquette first and the accessories second, because that is the order that keeps people safe.

The physical basics

Anything worn around a limb can compress blood vessels and nerves. Numbness, tingling, coldness or colour change are signs to release immediately. Plan the release before the restraint: beginner products should open in seconds without tools, and safety scissors belong within reach for anything that does not.

Never leave a restrained person alone. Never restrain around the neck. Never restrict breathing. These are not advanced cautions; they are the floor.

The categories a beginner can approach

Blindfolds and sensory accessories involve no restraint at all and are the gentlest place to start. Soft, padded, hook-and-loop restraint sets are the standard first restraint because they are adjustable and instantly releasable. Bondage tape and soft cotton rope belong to simple, loose, decorative ties only.

  • Blindfold and feather: sensation without restraint
  • Padded quick-release cuffs: adjustable, instant release
  • Soft cotton rope: loose ties only, scissors within reach

What needs qualified instruction

Suspension, rope work beyond simple ties, impact beyond light play, and anything involving breath are outside the scope of this book and of any shopping guide. They require instruction from qualified, experienced people, and they should never be attempted from a product listing.

Aftercare

Water, warmth, physical comfort, reassurance and a conversation about what worked and what did not. Aftercare needs are individual, so agree in advance what each person would like. It is part of the activity.
